The Native Texas Butterfly House and Garden will be open during the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary's regular days and operating hours (usually Tuesdays through Saturdays 9am-4pm and Sundays 1pm-4pm). Ticketing prices are included in general admission.

Visitors to the Native Texas Butterfly House and Garden at Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney, Texas will have the opportunity to walk among free-flying native butterflies and other pollinators. Guests will be able to view butterflies up close while learning about their life stages and more.

The butterfly house is regularly stocked with an assortment of native butterfly species, which varies throughout the exhibit. Guests may even get to see a butterfly emerge from a chrysalis. Inside the butterfly house, nectar plants are also available to feed the adult butterflies. There are even a few host plants for caterpillars to feed on ("host plants").

The butterfly garden, too, is filled with nectar plants and host plants that naturally attract these lovely creatures. Guests may even find a few ideas to try in home gardens, which can in turn help pollinators on a broader scale. From time to time, other species of wildlife that feed on insects or the nectar plants may also be found in the butterfly garden, including hummingbirds. This area is also a great setting for nature photography. The Native Texas Butterfly House and Garden is sponsored by NBC5.

While lessons are TEKS aligned, the focus is placed on the scientific process of experimentation and discovery. Campers learn the 'how' and the 'why' along with the 'what'. We love it when something doesn't work the first time. It means we get to try again!

STEM Camps: Campers entering 1st-4th grade in the fall work in our STEM classrooms on experiments and activities that introduce them to working in a lab as a scientist. They explore themes each week including astronomy, biology, chemistry and robotics. All activities are hands-on with an emphasis on discovery!
MAKER Camps: Campers entering 5th-6th grade step into our MakerSpace workshop to experience engineering and building with hand tools. Campers can use hand tools for woodworking, learn to code and program, assemble and program circuitry, and engineer mechanical devices.
